If america of "yesterday" is what you want look no further than small town pools. The one in Ames was built by a family inthe 40's and eventually donated to the city. It's about 50 yds by 22 yards. There are still lots of little kids enjoying a flawless summer day with blue skies and no clouds.
The man in the lane next to me loaned me his pull buoy and I let him try my mp3 player that I use.
He saw my Superman cap and told me that he knows the current Superman, Brandon Routh, well, as they both come from the same nearby town.
Adult lap swim was from noon to one and now all the kids are in. We have been here an hour and seen only one other rider, as this pool is out of the way.
The pool is well represented by the usual caste of characters: the old thin man who is very dark and oiling himself self up in the sun, the heavy ladies, the cool high school girls and seemingly only one parent for every 30 kids.

So the first thing you notice when you go to a community pool is old guys oiling themselves up?
Sounds like you're having fun. almost makes me wish I still had a bike!
